Midlothian Residents Share Their Priorities for Economic Development

This summer, Midlothian Economic Development worked with ETC Institute to hear directly from residents through a economic development community survey. The survey used a random sample of households to make sure results reflected our community as a whole. With feedback from more than 500 households and a margin of error of less than 5%, the survey is considered statistically significant meaning the results truly capture what matters most to the people of Midlothian. This ensures MED can make decisions based on accurate, reliable input from the community.

The survey asked residents to weigh in on MED’s priorities as the organization develops its next strategic plan. The results make it clear: residents want thoughtful growth that balances economic opportunity with preserving Midlothian’s identity.

Key takeaways from the survey include:

  • Downtown Revitalization Tops the List – 81% of respondents agreed that investing in downtown is essential for strengthening community identity and boosting economic activity.
  • Quality Jobs & Strong Tax Base – 79% supported attracting employers that provide well-paying jobs while expanding the local tax base.
  • More Dining & Entertainment – 71% agreed that encouraging new shopping, dining, and entertainment options would help make Midlothian a destination.

When it comes to primary job recruitment (companies who export a product or service), residents placed strong importance on attracting employers who:

  • Strengthen the tax base and help keep property taxes low.
  • Prioritize projects with minimal negative impact on the community.
  • On job training, residents emphasized partnering with training providers and expanding training in trade occupations—ensuring the workforce has opportunities that align with future needs.

Survey participants also highlighted the importance of:

  • Ensuring new developments deliver a strong financial return to the community.
  • Preserving Midlothian’s small-town character while welcoming growth.
  • Continuing investment in infrastructure to support a growing city.

As MED moves forward with its strategic planning, these insights will serve as an important guidepost. The community’s voice is shaping the roadmap for growth—and helping ensure Midlothian thrives today and for years to come.
